The piece was filmed in deprived areas of Durban and Capetown where the production team met with parents, community leaders, headmasters and teachers who were happy to help in any way they could. Even in the most poverty-stricken areas, peoples generosity to participate was extraordinary. For their participation in the film, each community received a fee which was distributed amongst the families. Ben Quinn kept the crew and equipment to a minimum, choosing to use a single lens on a 16mm camera.
